Bike Ride Around Lake Washington

Kim and I circled Lake Washington again today, via the Redmond Starbucks for large iced lattes, then along route 901 which took us south along the western shore of Lake Samammish, then into Issaquah on a siding road (to I-90).  After meandering across I-90 and the auto dealerships on some nice bike paths and a special bridge over the westbound onramp (yay… so much safer than before), we headed west again on the southern siding road.  Some twists and turns, a quick stop to pick juicy blackberries along I-405 right beside the spur trail, then onto Renton.  A quick detour along the Cedar River drainage into Lake Washington to get water and eat a bit, we road around the airport access road and then headed north on Rainier Avenue South.  After about 200 meters, Rainier Avenue South reduces to a single lane with a bike path on the right, which is far safer than the old days with high speed traffic in both lanes.  After a few miles, we cut to the east a bit and headed up the hill to the road that leads down to Seward Park, riding the rest of the way along the lake and then up from Leschi to around the Bush School, where, instead of racing through the narrow Arboretum, we instead followed the bike route back to the UW Stadium area.

The weather was perfect, about 66 degrees at the start and 71 degrees at the end about five hours later.  Our typical pace was 17.5 miles an hour, but varied a lot due to many small hills and one hill that rose for 1.5 miles before leveling off.

Our route and elevation profile, with the last mile cut off when my GPS ran out of track point storage.  Oops…
