Tucson ‘07
Kim and I had our longest getaway ever this year (nearly six days!), reliving the honeymoon we never had, by flying to Tucson, Arizona at 6 am on February 1st. Yes, that’s early — we were up at 4 am — but we were psyched. Time to ourselves, away from jobs, routines, the usual worries and chores; and hopefully we’d get a huge dose of sunshine to blow away the winter blues. We were going to meet Marion, meet up with my parents a couple times, see Phil’s opera, and, weather permitting, hike in the mountains north of Tucson. And that happened, and more!
When we touched down in Tucson, it was a chilly 45 degrees F with ominous dark and swirling blowing from the northwest. We got our car, stopped for a quick lunch, and then zipped to the north part of town to get settled in our motel. Then it was off to meet up with Phil and Marion. It was simply a joy and relief to finally meet Marion! After chatting for a while, we went out for a walk along one of the usually dry riverbeds that run through Tucson, and they made us dinner. The plan for the next day was to drive out to the Sonora Desert Museum, a sure stop for us on any trip to the area.

Thankfully, it was a bit warmer, reaching perhaps 60F, and sunny, too, on our exploration of the museum which is mostly outdoors on short trails that wind through the desert. One highlight was visiting the hummingbird aviary and getting a few shots of the fleeting birds, and another was eating lunch on the outdoor patio surrounded by brightly colored birds.
